1. $f(x)=y$

$x$ is called the input or argument of the function and $f(x)$ or $y$ is called the output or value at $x$.

ex. If $f(x)=x^{2}+x+1$ what is the value of $f$ at $x=3$?

The value of $f$ at $x=3$ is 13

2. $(x,y){\text{ or }}(x,f(x))$ is called an ordered pair where $x$ is the input and $y{\text{ or }}f(x)$ is the output
